Ingredients

Scale

Filling Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Dough Ingredients:

  • 2 sheets pie dough
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Heat Oil: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Cook Onions: Add the diced onions to the skillet and cook until they become translucent.
  3. Cook Beef: Add the ground beef, along with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of pepper. Cook until the beef is fully cooked.
  4. Mix Ingredients: Transfer the cooked beef mixture into a large bowl. Add shredded cheese, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and the remaining 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix thoroughly.
  5. Prepare Dough: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the pie crust and cut it into 4 pieces.
  6. Fill Dough: Place a spoonful of the beef and cheese mixture on one side of each piece of dough, leaving 1/4 inch (6 mm) from the edge. Fold the dough over to create a triangle.
  7. Seal Empanadas: Use a fork to crimp down the edges to secure the filling inside.
  8. Prepare for Baking: Transfer the empanadas onto a baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  10. Cool and Serve: Let the empanadas cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Don’t overfill the empanadas to prevent them from bursting during baking.
  • Prepare the filling in advance and store it in the fridge for easy meal prep.
  • Add spices like cumin or paprika for extra flavor.
  • Chill the assembled empanadas for 15 minutes before baking to maintain their shape.
